Z Energy operates to high standards of corporate governance.

The company’s executive team and CEO are based in Wellington. The Board comprises members from a variety of locations and backgrounds with a diverse range of skills and experience.

The Board meets every two months and regular stand-alone committee meetings are also held with Board representation.

Peter is a professional director and international oil-industry veteran. Until 2009, Peter was Managing Director of BP New Zealand. He previously served on the boards of The New Zealand Refining Company, Liquigas, New Zealand Oil and Gas, Energy Direct, Wanganui Gas, and Bitumix. In addition to a range of personal interests, Peter is a director of Marsden Maritime Holdings and Metro Performance Glass, and a member of the Civil Aviation Authority.

Abby is a professional director with experience in publicly listed and Crown companies. Trained as a lawyer, she has worked in corporate, treasury, and legal roles for over 20 years. Abby is a former director of Transpower New Zealand, and currently serves on the boards of New Zealand Local Government Funding Agency, Livestock Improvement Corporation, TVNZ, BNZ Life Insurance, and Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Alan is an experienced corporate leader. He was CEO and Chair of McDonald’s Restaurants New Zealand before moving to Chicago to become Vice President of Operations, then Regional Vice President in the Nordic region, and Managing Director of McDonald’s Sweden. Alan manages his own business, Trumpeter Consulting, and is a director of New Zealand Post, BurgerFuel Worldwide, and several private companies.

Justine is a change leader currently working in the area of the future of work, and developing and measuring 21st century skills. She has led or helped establish many not-forprofit organisations. She is a former McKinsey & Company consultant, lawyer specialising in indigenous issues, and Rhodes Scholar. Justine is a trustee of Simplicity NZ, a member of the NZQA board, and was previously Director of Champions for Change – a group of 50 CEOs and chairs committed to advancing diversity and inclusion.

Mark is a professional director with 20 years’ international experience in investment banking. He holds diverse directorships spanning publicly listed companies, institutional investment funds, and notfor-profit organisations. Mark is the Chair of Milford Asset Management and SIL/MFL Superannuation Funds, and a director of Genesis Energy, Chorus, Argosy Property, and Triathlon NZ. Mark is a member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

Paul has many years’ experience in primary industries. He was the founding CEO of Nyrstar NV, the world’s largest producer of zinc metal, COO of Zinifex, and CEO of Fletcher Challenge Forests and Carter Holt Harvey Forests. He spent 15 years with BP in crude oil trading, strategic planning, refining, and retail marketing. Paul has served on the boards of The New Zealand Refining Company and Evergreen Forests.

Julia is a professional director with 26 years’ experience in customer experience, innovation, technology, business transformation, and strategic planning. She was the Chief Information Officer at Air New Zealand for eight years, and has held management positions in local government, telecommunications, and notfor-profit organisations. Julia is a director of TVNZ, The Warehouse Group, Jade Software, and Southern Cross Health Society.

Stephen Reindler is an independent director. He joined the Z Board on 1 May 2017.

Stephen is a professional director with extensive experience in engineering-related industries and workplace health and safety.

Stephen's background is as a mechanical engineer and he lives in Auckland. He holds a number of directorships, including with Meridian Energy Limited, Naylor Love Enterprises, Waste Disposal Services, Broome International Airport and Worksafe New Zealand.

Mike became CEO of Z Energy after 25 years with BP in a variety of downstream roles in New Zealand, China, South Africa, the UK and Singapore. His last role was as CEO of BP’s Eastern Hemisphere supply and trading business.

Chris Day
Chief Financial Officer

Before moving to Z Energy, Chris has held general management, Chief Financial Officer and Financial Controller roles in a range of listed and commercial companies. Most recently as Financial Controller for Contact Energy and before that as Chief Financial Officer for AXA New Zealand. He is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (CA) and is a director of Landcorp Farming Limited.

Mark Forsyth

Mark held management positions with Shell in New Zealand, the UK and Ireland. He oversees Z Energy’s 200+ service stations and nearly 100 truckstops, as well as marketing, brand and asset management. Mark is a Director of Loyalty New Zealand Ltd.

Before moving to New Zealand in 2011 to lead the New Zealand governments Petroleum and Minerals division, Dave held a number of senior roles in the global energy industry. He started a 25 year career with BP as an engineer in Scotland, progressed through oil refining and chemicals manufacturing roles to commodity trading management and ultimately to lead BP’s Alternative Energy business development in Abu Dhabi. Prior to embarking on his New Zealand adventures, he was Managing Director of the UK’s Oil & Gas industry’s skills and competence development organisation, OPITO.

Before moving to Z Energy, Sharlene held various HR roles across Fletcher Building Limited including in the Building Products and Corporate divisions and most recently as HR/Change Manager for the ICT Transformation project. Prior to this, she was with Goodman Fielder for 4 years, primarily working in the Dairy operation and Home Ingredients operations across Australasia.

Meredith has been with Z Energy since May 2010 when the company was acquired from Shell New Zealand. Previously with Todd Energy and the New Zealand Racing Board/TAB, Meredith is an experienced corporate lawyer in both the energy and franchise network industries. Prior to that, she was a Senior Associate with Minter Ellison Rudd Watts.

Prior to that Jane was with Shell for 14 years in a variety of local and global brand, marketing and operations positions in NZ, Australia, the UK and Europe.

Julian Hughes
GM Health Safety Security and Environment

Julian has worked in the fields of health, safety, rehabilitation and wellness management for nearly 20 years. Most recently he helped set up and head the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum, a group of over 200 Chief Executives who had committed to working together to improve workplace health and safety in New Zealand. Prior to this Julian was the National Manager of safety and welling at the New Zealand Fire Service and he also has experience in the road transport, construction and health sectors as a consultant. Julian has a Masters in Health Science degree from Auckland University.

Nicolas was previously Z’s Strategy Manager. In that role he was responsible for strategy development and managing Z’s merger & acquisition activity. Prior to joining Z, Nicolas held roles at the New Zealand Treasury and Macquarie.
